My Finished Box
« on: September 26, 2017, 05:34:33 PM »
I got my box back from a furniture restorer who I know. He has put the finish on my Gecho box for me.

It's a lovely job, just thin enough so that the grain can be felt. Opening and closing the box is silky smooth.

It's difficult to get the colours and shades to look right with my camera (I'm no photography expert), but I'd describe it as being light with a lot of the grain of the wood featured. It is just a little darker than an unfinished box. It feels smooth but not glossy or overdone (to me).

Looks/sounds good to me! Did he use some kind of wood finishing oil?

I trust you it is really hard to take a decent photo, in order to give better impression of colours I took the same picture at different lighting conditions and they look totally different.

Grain was wrecking our heads sometimes, on two or three boxes the structure came out the way that they appeared unevenly painted, and it couldn't be fixed no matter how much sanding and re-varnishing, still looked like sloppy work... as if half of the lid had two more coatings than the rest (so we didn't send them out - will eventually paint them black). Feels like this is a whole new science to learn, to get it right :)

Yes, he used matt tung oil for the finish.
