I thought I can click in the right bottom corner of the app, and it sais "update board firmware". Well, the Lizard is switched on, RST light blinks, and I only get the message "check for firmware update failed". Any ideas? :'(
I have the app v0.61.b, windows and ... no clue, a kickstarter gecko

Hi Gerd, this message means the Gecho is connected and it's current firmware version is known, but the app cannot reach the server to check if there is a newer version available.

Could it be a firewall or such? What is your system? Also an intermittent server failure might be the cause, although very unlikely - if you tried more times and it still fails, that would rule it out.

Thanks for the heads up, looks like I need to add more explicit error messages covering the internet connection problems.

gerdschwaderer--

Try right-clicking the Gecho app icon and opening it with Administrator privileges. That made the difference for me after having the same problem; I was then able to update my firmware to 0.224.

FYI, I am running Win10 x64 and had just plugged the the Gecho in for the first time. I restarted to complete the installation of the CH340 USB Serial Device Drivers as Windows was giving me error messages at first. The driver error message was resolved on reboot, but I still couldn't get the Gecho app to communicate with the Gecho as far as firmware version check is concerned. For me, running the Gecho app as admin solved this issue.

Hope this helps for you as well!

Thanks Teddy, great hint with the Administrator privileges! It doesn't seem to be required in Win7 and as I rarely use Win10, forgot about this possibility completely.

Hi Mario,

I just realized my v1 Gecho is at v243. Like the person above, I’m on Win10 with the 0.61b app and successfully connected to the Gecho, controlling it, etc—but when attempting to update, I’m getting the error which you indicated to likely be the app unable to reach the server. I’ve tried running as Admin, using various compatibility modes, turned off the firewall—with no luck.

Any new ideas? Can I host the update locally somehow?

Thanks!!

Hi and sorry about the problem! it most likely happens because I've recently moved parts of the website from http to https (and added automatic redirects).

The server logs from yesterday (assuming it was you) show that the app opens http link as it used to do but does not follow the redirect. It has probably something to do with the operating system or its settings, as it worked for me in windows 11. The app is quite old and was never updated after we enabled https on the server, it would be a good idea to do that now.

I've now enabled the non-secure access again for the firmware downloads, hopefully that helps - please let me know if there are any issues.

Hi Mario,

Your server adjustment did allow the app to advance further: It reported my Gecho v1 is indeed running v243 and offers the update to v244. (Thank you!)

But next, after a couple seconds the app posts the following error: “Access violation at address 00416DBC in module ‘Gecho_app_v062_beta.exe’. Write of address 00000029” …No crash, but also no update.

Thank you for reporting the error, luckily the same happened with my unit. It should be fixed now!  8)
